Fatigue Risk Management Policy Template

A fatigue risk management policy template committing to assess, reduce and manage the risks from fatigue at work, recognising that fatigue reduces a person's ability to process information and react, and can lead to mistakes, accidents and ill health.

The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.

What the Fatigue Risk Management Policy Covers

  • Working hours - hours that are not too long, with adequate breaks during the day and between shifts
  • Weekly limit - no one required to work more than an average of 48 hours a week unless they have opted out in writing, with hours still monitored for fatigue
  • Consecutive shifts - limits on shifts worked on consecutive days without a break
  • Night shifts - limits on nights in a row, with days off after a run of nights
  • Critical tasks - not scheduled for the end of a shift where this can be avoided
  • Working environment - an environment that does not cause drowsiness
  • Risk assessment - fatigue considered in risk assessments, including shift patterns, travel and driving
  • Incidents - incidents where fatigue may be a factor thoroughly investigated
  • Reporting - fatigue problems reported without fear of blame
  • Causes of fatigue - lack of sleep, low points in the day, long hours and journeys, and inadequate breaks
  • What workers should do - sleep, rest breaks, telling their manager about other jobs, and not driving or doing safety-critical work when too tired

Using the Policy

Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.

Who Needs a Fatigue Risk Management Policy?

Document Control
